Time &DistanceMarathon

22 October · 7:00 PM

Time and distance turns up on almost every IBA maths paper, and it is where students lose the most time setting up equations. In this live marathon we work through the topic on real IBA past-paper questions, from average speed to trains meeting and boats turning back, with the shortcut beside the long way each time. For BBA and MBA.

RUNNING ORDER

What happens in the evening

  1. 01Speed, distance and time, set up fastChoosing a distance yourself (the LCM of the speeds) so average speed and round trips come out in whole numbers, and why the plain average of two speeds is a trap.
  2. 02Switch the speed or the distanceWhen the distance is fixed, the time ratio is the speed ratio flipped: late and early arrivals, head starts and catching up, without an equation.
  3. 03Moving towards and apartRelative speed for trains, people and boats meeting or overtaking, and the meet-again rule: by the second meeting, each has covered three times the first distance.
  4. 04Race me on real IBA questionsA long run of timed IBA past-paper questions on the topic, each solved the long way and the short way so you see exactly what the shortcut saves.

WHO IT IS FOR

Anyone sitting the IBA BBA or MBA admission test who can do the maths but runs out of time doing it.

WHAT IT IS NOT

It covers one topic, not the whole maths section. The IBA Crash Course teaches all of it, ten maths classes from 2 November, with speed and work in class M8 on Saturday 14 November.
